Video 14: How to Set-up Caller ID

This video instructs you on setting up and editing your Caller ID from the “Extensions” and “Outbound Routes” modules of your phone system, or using the “CDRs” tab on your SIP.us SIP trunk.

1. Log into your SIP.us account > Click “SIP Trunking” > Select “CDRs” tab

  • The numbers below the column labeled “Source #” display the Caller ID information for each extension on the phone system

2. Browse to your FreePBX admin screen > Select “Applications” drop down menu > Select “Extensions” module > Select one of the extensions you created (right side of your screen)

  • Under the “Extensions Options” section enter a “Outbound CID”
  • Review formatting options by hovering over the “?” next to “Outbound CID” (most carriers want 10 digits)
  • Click “Submit”
  • Click “Apply Config”

3. Browse back to your SIP.us account > Click “SIP Trunking > Select “CDRs” tab

  • Make a test call with the extension that you just changed the “Outbound CID” on, in the previous step
  • The “Source #” should now display the “Outbound CID”

4. Browse to FreePBX admin screen > Select “Connectivity” drop down menu > Select “Outbound Routes” module > Select one of the outbound routes you created (right hand side of the screen)

  • Under the “Route Settings” section, click the “Override Extension” check box, and enter a “Route CID” in the text field
  • Click “Submit”
  • Click “Apply Config”

5. Browse back to your SIP.us account > Click “SIP Trunking” > Select “CDRs” tab

  • Make a test call with the extension that you changed the “Route CID” on, in the previous step
  • The “Source #” should now display the “Route CID”

6. From your SIP.us account > Click “SIP Trunking” > Select “Trunks” tab > Click “Modify trunk # ‘123456789’ ”. This will allow you to change your Caller ID directly from your SIP.us account instead of through your PBX.

  • Enter a value for “CallerID Override” in the text field for your trunk number
  • Click “Submit”

7. From your SIP.us account > Click “SIP Trunking” > Select “CDRs” tab

  • Make a test call with the extension that you changed the “CallerID Override” on, in the previous step
  • The “Source #” should now display the “CallerID Override”

8. Browse to FreePBX admin > Select “Applications” drop down > Select “Extensions” module > Select one of the extensions you created (right hand side of the screen)

  • Under the “Extensions Options” section enter a name to be displayed when you dial out from your extensions in the “Outbound CID” text field
  • Ensure the name you enter is beside the number and in quotations

You can now set whatever caller ID you want displayed from your newly created PBX, or from your SIP.us account. The new caller ID doesn’t necessarily have to be the number that you were given by your SIP trunking provider.

What is Caller ID?

Caller ID, specifically outbound caller ID is also often referred to as CID or CNAM (Caller ID Name).  Each extension on your phone system can list alpha-numeric characters to display to a recipient of a call.
